Wes and I have gotten into a strange habit of wearing matching shirts.  Considering most of our wardrobe consists of free youth-events and work t-shirts, it is easy to accidentally wear the same thing.  In fact, that is how this bizarre thing got started. It struck me as extraordinarily funny when Wes and I coincidently wore the same shirt one day and so Wes dressed to match me the next day to get another reaction from me.  On the third day, I deliberately matched him.  And it just rolled downhill from there.

I enjoy seeing and hearing people’s reaction.  “Wait, do you guys always match?”  Some people think it’s cute, others think it’s weird, and others are just dumbfounded by it.  One young man after asking and hearing about how it got started replied that he would find it annoying to have to match.  Then he added, “Maybe that is why I am still single.” He missed the point.  We don’t HAVE to match. For us it is just a silly fun thing to do at the moment.

Yet maybe he has a point. If his mindset or approach to marriage is based on things he has to do then no wonder it sounds annoying or like drudgery!  There is a huge difference in having to do something to be unified versus being unified and it spilling out in life!  We are unified in our marriage and our matching shirts is an external manifestation of our walking joyfully in that unity. If it was something we had to do it would suck all the fun out it! (FYI-You don’t have to match clothes to prove you are united in your marriage!)

Do you realize that as a believer you have been united to Christ?  (Romans 6 & 7)  It is something we enter into and receive by faith.  You have been united. It is not about anything you HAVE to do. Nevertheless, I pray that your unity with Christ is something that is joyfully spilling out in your life!  Just as it can take time to learn how to walk unified in marriage, it can take time to learn how to walk in oneness with Jesus.  But learning to walk in oneness in marriage or in Christ doesn’t negate the fact that there has been a joining of the two into one. It is the very foundation for living out a unified life with Christ.

As Wes and I’s clothing reveals a deeper unity of our hearts, may your clothing of Christ reveal the deeper unity of your union with Him  😉 Pun intended…
