Wes created a sweet surprise for me this week.  We had some errands to do in the morning and while we were out he asked if I would want to stop at a park to walk around. We have been making more of an effort to exercise so I was open to the suggestion.  I was a little confused about the park he choose because though it is pleasant it has just a small path for walking on the perimeter.   I began to understand as he pulled out a Koosh Flingshot out of his pocket.

To help you understand better let me take you back 22 years ago.  Wes and I were young (I was still in my teens and him, early 20s) and just beginning to date.  We somehow ended up at a toy store where we picked up a couple of these Koosh Flingshots.  Then we went to that exact park and ran around like over-energized children and flung shots at one another. We chased, laughed, flirted, teased, and in general were merciless with each other on our battlefield.  That date was a defining aspect of our relationship.

So we reminisced this week and re-lived the days of our youth…. with some slight variation.  We didn’t run as much!  Oh we were merciless still.  We laughed, flirted, teased and caused a good amount of commotion.  Yet our connection was different.  We played from a place of familiarity, long-standing intimacy, and confidence of our relationship. Wes said it reminded him of this verse in Proverbs…

Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice in the wife of your youth.
Proverbs 5:18

What a blessing it is to be able to take delight in a relationship that has has weathered through rough waters and consequently has deepened. I love that God uses the imagery of marriage to convey how Jesus is in relationship with us.  Admittedly, Jesus and I have had our rough waters.  But I can take confidence in how He loves me, is committed to me, and takes pleasure in our relationship.

Jesus has chosen you as His bride.  He rejoices in you!  I pray that you get to experience the intimacy and depth of His love for you!
